Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated the people and government of Nepal for the peaceful and successful completion of their elections, calling it a “historic milestone” in the country’s democratic journey.
In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister praised Nepali citizens for their active participation in the electoral process.
“I warmly congratulate the people and Government of Nepal on the successful and peaceful conduct of elections. It is heartening to see my Nepali sisters and brothers exercise their democratic rights so vibrantly,” Modi wrote.
Describing the elections as a significant step in strengthening Nepal’s democracy, he added, “This historic milestone is a proud moment in Nepal’s democratic journey.”
Modi also reaffirmed India’s commitment to working closely with Nepal’s new government.
“As a close friend and neighbour, India remains steadfast in its commitment to working closely with the people of Nepal and their new Government to scale new heights of shared peace, progress and prosperity,” he said.
India and Nepal share deep-rooted cultural, civilizational, and economic ties, along with an open border that facilitates extensive people-to-people interaction. The two countries maintain close diplomatic engagement and cooperation across sectors such as trade, infrastructure, energy, and connectivity.
Nepal’s democratic evolution has undergone major transformations over the past decades, including the abolition of the monarchy in 2008 and the adoption of a new constitution in 2015, which established the country as a federal democratic republic. Elections are widely seen as a key mechanism for strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring political stability.
Modi’s message underscores New Delhi’s continued interest in supporting Nepal’s democratic processes and deepening bilateral relations as the Himalayan nation charts its course under a newly elected government.
