Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday telephoned Chinese President Xi Jinping to congratulate him on his re-election for another five years

Modi said the re-election demonstrated that Xi enjoyed the support of the whole Chinese nation, Chinese news agency Xinhua said.

“Both India and China are ancient civilisations with global influence,’’ Modi said, adding that India would work with China to enhance high-level exchanges, deepen bilateral ties, strengthen coordination and cooperation in international affairs to further a closer developmental partnership and promote global and regional peace and development.

Xi appreciated Modi’s gesture and informed him that the just-concluded annual sessions of the Chinese National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) have achieved great success.

The telephonic conversation came when the two countries are seeking to reset bilateral ties following last summer’s military stand-off at Doklam.

Modi is scheduled to visit China in June for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will be visiting China next month for the SCO foreign ministers’ meeting and to prepare the ground for Modi’s visit.
