Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun a crucial two-nation European tour, arriving in Nice, France, for a series of high-level diplomatic engagements, technology-focused discussions, and participation in the G7 Summit. The Prime Minister’s tour will include France, Slovakia, and a return to France for the G7 Summit in Evian. The visit comes with a packed agenda covering high-stakes talks with US President Donald Trump, India-France ties, innovation partnerships, European outreach, and key global issues.

PM Modi was welcomed in Nice by senior French officials, including Minister of Education Edouard Geffray, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Space Philippe Baptiste, and France’s Ambassador to India, Thierry Mathou.

On arrival, the Prime Minister received a warm welcome from the Indian community in Nice. PM Modi said in a post on X, “Though they may be several kilometres away from home, the bond of our diaspora with India remains as strong as ever.”

PM Modi, Macron to discuss strategic partnership

A major highlight of the France leg will be PM Modi’s meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on June 14. The talks come after India-France ties were elevated to a Special Global Strategic Partnership earlier this year.

The two leaders will also launch Bharat Innovates 2026, a three-day innovation conclave aimed at bringing together startups and venture capital funds from India, France and other countries to strengthen cooperation in emerging technologies.

First Indian PM visit to Slovakia since independence

PM Modi will next travel to Slovakia for a state visit from June 14-15, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since Slovakia became independent in 1993.

During his stay in Bratislava, PM Modi is scheduled to hold talks with President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico. He will also meet business leaders, with discussions expected to focus on bilateral cooperation and India’s engagement with the European Union.

G7 Summit and Global South focus

PM Modi will return to France on June 16 to attend the G7 Summit in Evian, scheduled from June 16-17.

A key meeting expected on the sidelines is between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump on June 17, with trade issues likely to be discussed.

Highlighting India’s role at the summit, PM Modi said India will not only present its own views but also represent the aspirations of the Global South.

“This is the 8th consecutive G7 Summit to which India has been invited,” PM Modi said, underlining India’s growing global engagement.

Final stop in Paris

The final leg of the tour will take PM Modi to Paris on June 18, where he is expected to attend VivaTech 2026 with President Macron and interact with members of the Indian diaspora.

PM Modi also highlighted France’s importance in India’s strategic vision and said the India-EU Free Trade Agreement momentum would further strengthen ties, with Slovakia playing an important role.
