Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed supporters of BJP and Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland’s Tuensang on Thursday, 22 February, ahead of the elections in the state.

Addressing the gathering in Hindi, PM Modi highlighted the developmental works carried out by his government at the Centre and the alliance government in the northeastern state.

Exhorting people to vote for the alliance for a “strong and stable government” in Nagaland, the PM said that both the Centre and the State will work as “double engines” for the development of the State.

He said that Nagaland will benefit from the “special priority” NDA government is giving to the Northeast.

Referring to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s remark, PM Modi said, “A PM of India had once stated that villages received only 15 paise out of Re 1 from the Centre. We need to change this situation through our determination.”

Underlining his vision for the transformation of northeast through transportation, the PM announced a plan of Rs 10,000 crore for roadways in Nagaland.

“Connectivity is a huge challenge in Nagaland. We are working relentlessly towards eliminating it. In less than 4 years, we have added 500 km of National Highways,” he said.

He also said that the Centre’s ‘Saubhagya Yojana’ will bring electricity to the 40 per cent households in the State which are still living in darkness.

“Till date, more than 10 lakh LED bulbs have been distributed in Nagaland, reducing consumption of power,” he said adding that his government has brought electricity in many areas of Nagaland which were without it since Independence.

An announcement of Rs 1800 crore for making Nagaland’s capital Kohima a Smart City was also made.

The PM concluded his speech asking the people to vote for the BJP-NDPP alliance. Elections for the 60-seat Nagaland Assembly will be held on 27 February. The poll results will be announced on 3 March.

Tuensang is about 360 km from state capital Kohima and has six assembly seats. The BJP has fielded candidates on four seats while NDPP nominees are in the fray on the remaining two constituencies.
