Breaking his silence after the LDF’s crushing defeat in the Kerala Assembly elections, outgoing chief minister and CPM Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said that the coalition accepts the verdict and aims to regain public trust. He also congratulated the UDF on its victory.
Terming the LDF’s defeat as “unexpected”, Vijayan in a Facebook post on Thursday, described the result as a “new beginning” for the Left, rather than an end to its political journey. He said that the LDF will conduct an open, democratic review of the shortcomings.
Vowing to act as a responsible opposition, Vijayan said the LDF will act as a responsible opposition and will exert pressure on the new government to implement the various welfare measures, like eradication of extreme poverty, women empowerment and social security, that were initiated by the Left government.
Terming the BJP winning three seats in the Assembly polls as “serious”, Vijayan said it was “worrisome” for those who wish to protect secularism.
