A 340-page photo essay capturing moments from the Presidency of Pranab Mukherjee will be released on Sunday, 2 July 2017, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The PM will present the first copy of the book to President Mukherjee at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

“President Pranab Mukherjee – A Statesman” is published by The Statesman. The photo essay was curated and photographed by Varun Joshi. Besides the photographs taken by Joshi as he shadowed the President over several months, the book also draws on the archives of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The photo essay was conceived as a tribute to the remarkable Presidency of Mukherjee. The foreword of the book says:

Mr Pranab Mukherjee, Congress politician and minister, became President Pranab Mukherjee, India’s first citizen and head of state in July 2012. Because he had been such a good politician, many insiders – and some commentators – were apprehensive about his ability to raise himself to the job of President.

We in The Statesman shared some of these concerns. Hence, our leader writers especially kept a close watch on what President Mukherjee said and did. Over the next five years, we watched in awe as he elevated the office he occupied and infused his Presidency with the qualities that our Constitutional scheme demands while preserving the best conventions that the republic had built up…

It was from this sense of awe and admiration that the idea of this photographic essay came.

The 566 photographs in the book ~460 taken by The Statesman and 106 drawn from Rashtrapati Bhavan archives ~ comprehensively cover Mukherjee’s Presidency and document  his various roles ~ as a humane first citizen, as a thought-leader and patron of educational institutions and the arts, as the country’s face to the world and as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The photographs ~ including some outstanding portraits ~ are interspersed with some of the President’s profound thoughts.

“President Pranab Mukhejee – A Statesman” is a comprehensive photographic record of India’s 13th Head of State.
