In the wake of ever-rising fuel prices with petrol touching a nearly five-year high of Rs 73.95 per litre in Delhi on Tuesday, the Congress President Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a tweet, Gandhi said that the poor and the middle class people are bearing the brunt of the hiked fuel prices.

The Congress leader shared an old edited video in which PM Modi is asking people about the petrol prices. In the video, PM Modi claims that the price of petrol has been reduced and the clip has been edited to add people laughing followed by PM Modi’s statement. The clip of Bollywood actor Salman Khan laughing uncontrollably is added to the video when the Prime Minister talks about savings.

Along with the video, Gandhi, in a tweet with #PeTrolled, wrote, “The poor & the middle class bear the brunt of rising fuel prices. In this video, our PM is quite obviously talking about some other country.”

Petrol prices continued to spiral on Tuesday, touching a nearly five-year high of Rs 73.95 per litre in Delhi. The previous high in the capital was Rs 74.10 a litre in September 2013.

In Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai too, prices climbed to new multi-year highs at Rs 81.80, Rs 76.66 and Rs 76.72 a litre, respectively, the Indian Oil website said.

The previous high in these cities was Rs 82.07 (Mumbai, March 2014), Rs 77.88 (Kolkata, May 2012) and Rs 77.53 (Chennai, May 2012).
