A devastating personal tragedy transformed the life of 65-year-old Anil Kumar Mahalik, turning him from a successful businessman into a committed philanthropist dedicated to supporting underprivileged students pursuing higher education.
Mahalik’s life changed irreversibly on September 26, 2022, following the loss of a loved one. The emotional trauma left him shattered, but over time, he sought solace in serving society and helping young students realise their academic dreams.
Driven by a desire to “give back to society”, Mahalik disposed of substantial portions of his immovable properties and utilised the proceeds to establish the Biswa Bhusan Memorial Trust on April 6, 2023. The charitable trust was created with the objective of extending financial assistance to meritorious students from economically weaker backgrounds, particularly those pursuing medical education.
What began as a deeply personal attempt to cope with grief has now evolved into a meaningful philanthropic mission.
Since its inception, the Trust has provided annual BB Scholarships to 30 deserving students whose higher education prospects were threatened by financial constraints. The initiative has already helped several students continue their studies and pursue professional careers.
The Trust has now invited fresh applications for BB Scholarships from meritorious students who qualify in NEET-UG examinations. Apart from medical aspirants, deserving students from other streams of higher education will also be considered for financial support.
Mahalik, who prefers to stay away from publicity, said the initiative has brought him emotional healing and renewed purpose in life.
“It is giving me immense peace of mind. It is giving me the strength to withstand the personal tragedy,” he said quietly.
For Mahalik, helping students overcome financial barriers has become more than charity — it is a way of transforming personal pain into hope for others.
