Passport row: ‘Pawan Khera should surrender,’ says Assam CM Himanta Sarma after SC denies bail relief to Congress leader

The legal heat on Congress leader Pawan Khera intensified on Friday after the Supreme Court of India declined to extend his transit anticipatory bail, prompting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ask him to “surrender before the law” and appear in Guwahati.

Sarma said Khera should present himself before the authorities in Assam instead of seeking further legal protection. “I think Pawan Khera should surrender before the law. He should come to Guwahati and surrender there,” the Chief Minister said.

The development follows a move by Assam Police to challenge in the Supreme Court of India the Telangana High Court order granting Pawan Khera one week of transit anticipatory bail from April 10, subject to conditions. The order required him to approach a competent court in Assam and seek relief in accordance with the law.

The case originates from a complaint filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of the Assam Chief Minister, over statements made by Khera regarding passport holdings and alleged overseas assets.

Khera had claimed that she possessed multiple passports from India, the UAE, and Egypt, and held undisclosed luxury properties in Dubai, along with links to a company in the United States.

The Sarma family has dismissed these claims, calling the documents “AI-generated fabrications” allegedly circulated through Pakistani social media networks.
