Heavy exchange of fire between India and Pakistan was reported along the LoC in Uri in Baramulla district on Thursday, 22 February.

Pakistani forces violated ceasefire early in the morning on the day when Indian security force personnel were engaging terrorists in neighbouring Bandipora district in Jammu-Kashmir.

Mortars and heavy machine guns have been used by Pakistani forces to target outposts and villages along the LoC. Indian armed forces are responding effectively to the violation.

The violation comes a day after Indian security force personnel killed one Pakistani soldier in retaliatory firing along the LoC in Tangdhar sector. A BSF soldier had died in sniper firing from Pakistani side on 20 February in the same sector.

Ceasefire violations by Pakistan have been on the rise since January this year prompting J-K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to call for a dialogue with Pakistan.

“Guns cannot solve any problems, only talks can,” she said in her latest call on 18 February underlining the need for both India and Pakistan to hold talks.

Besides ceasefire violation, Pakistan-sponsored terrorists have been launching attacks on India. Six soldiers and a civilian lost their lives in the 10 February attack on the Sunjuwan Military Camp.

Indian Army lost 28 soldiers along the LoC in 2017. Around 138 Pak Army soldiers were killed in retaliation the same year.
