OTA cadet dies of boxing match injuries

A cadet at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) here died of injuries he sustained while participating in a boxing competition, a defence statement said on Tuesday.

Gentleman Cadet Rony Scaria sustained a head injury in a boxing competition on Monday and lost his life despite a surgery at a private hospital here, it said.

“Military Academies all over the world teach and train its cadets in boxing, as the sport develops self confidence, aggressive spirit and perseverance which are essential qualities of a military leader.

“Protective gear of international standards and as mandated by sports authorities, are donned by all cadets during practice and competitions. The loss of Cadet Rony is therefore, most unfortunate,” the statement added.

Scaria joined the academy in April 2017 and was slated to be commissioned as an Army officer in March 2018.
