Parliament witnessed a fresh round of confrontation between the Opposition parties and the ruling side on Monday, as differences emerged over the priority of the order of the agenda to be taken up for discussion. While the Opposition insisted on debating the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar first, the ruling side pushed for a discussion on Operation Sindoor, a recent military operation in response to a terrorist attack.
The Lok Sabha eventually started the debate on Operation Sindoor, but not before two mid-proceeding adjournments amid opposition demand to initiate discussion on the SIR exercise before taking up any other issue. The Opposition parties had been demanding a discussion on the SIR exercise, citing concerns over voter disenfranchisement and alleging cheating in the voter list revision process. The ruling side, on the other hand, accused the Opposition of trying to avoid a discussion on Operation Sindoor.
The Opposition parties have been vocal about their concerns over the SIR exercise, claiming that it is being used to disenfranchise certain sections of voters. They have also alleged that the exercise is being conducted in a biased manner, with the ruling party using its influence to manipulate the electoral rolls.
The ruling side, however, has maintained that the SIR exercise is a routine process aimed at ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the electoral rolls. They have accused the Opposition of trying to politicise the issue and create confusion among voters.
The debate on Operation Sindoor is expected to be contentious, with the Opposition likely to raise questions about the government’s handling of the situation. The government, on the other hand, is expected to defend its actions and highlight the successes of the operation.
The confrontation between the Opposition and the ruling side comes at a time when Parliament is trying to resume its proceedings smoothly after a disrupted first week. The Opposition parties had staged protests and demanded discussions on various issues, including the SIR exercise first on priority.
As the debate on Operation Sindoor continues, it remains to be seen how the Opposition and the ruling side will engage with each other and whether they will be able to find common ground on the issues at hand.
