A fire triggered by a gas leak at an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) well in Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema region has been burning for more than 24 hours, officials said on Tuesday. No injuries or deaths have been reported so far.

The incident has caused anxiety among residents of nearby villages. People are being asked to stay away from the area as firefighting and safety operations continue.

The leak was reported on Monday afternoon at the Mori-5 well, located in Irusumanda village under Malikipuram mandal of Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district.

Officials said the gas pipeline leak was detected at around 12:40 pm on January 5. From a distance, towering flames could be seen as the escaping gas caught fire.

The authorities responded quickly after locals alerted them. Fire services, police personnel, and ONGC officials are jointly working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading.

“ONGC officials, along with fire and police personnel, are dousing the fire. Villagers are in a state of panic and fear,” officials said earlier.

As of Tuesday, the fire had not been fully extinguished. Officials said the situation is under constant watch, and technical teams are assessing the cause of the leak.

The area around the well has been restricted as a precaution. Authorities reiterated that there have been no casualties, a fact confirmed by both ONGC and local officials.
