J-K: One person killed as security force personnel retaliate to firing

One person was killed and another injured in the wee hours of Sunday when Army personnel opened fire after noticing suspicious movement near a tunnel construction site in the Gool area of Ramban district.

The incident took place at about 3.45 am when the security personnel posted at a tunnel construction site in Sumbad Kholi area noticed movement around their camp. The killed person has been identified as Mohammad Rafiq (28).

A spokesman of the Army said that based on specific intelligence inputs an operation was launched in Kohli area of Gool.

At 3:45 am the army patrol saw some suspicious activity. The suspected individuals were challenged by the army as per Standing Operating Procedure. On being challenged, the suspected individuals opened fire upon the army patrol. On this, the Army patrol effectively retaliated the firing by suspects. Further details are being ascertained, the spokesman said.

Senior police officers of the district have rushed to the village to ascertain facts about the incident.

Meanwhile, the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation demanded judicial enquiry into the incident and urged the defence minister to punish those involved in killing of the civilian.
