At least one person died and five others were left injured as clashes broke out between two groups in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, the clashes were because of an old rivalry between the groups. Shots were fired leading to the death of one man. Police personnel were injured as they tried to bring the situation under control.

The incident happened in Jagdishpur area of the city. As the situation grew tense, shopkeepers reportedly downed the shutters. Police personnel have been deployed in huge numbers and senior officials are taking stock of the situation.

According to News 18, the SP and SO have been suspended.

Cops have reportedly identified some suspects and will be taking action.

The incident comes as the state government is still grappling with the aftermath of the Kasganj violence in which one person died and many more were injured in a confrontation on 26 January.

Amethi is the parliamentary constituency of Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Protests and clashes between the police and workers of the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) broke out when Gandhi paid a visit to his parliamentary constituency on 15 and 16 January.
