Emphasising Odisha’s rich tribal heritage, Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati on Sunday urged universities across the state to undertake extensive research on indigenous knowledge systems, tribal traditions and cultural preservation.
He announced that publications on Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), prepared by the Tribal Cell of Lok Bhavan, would be shared with universities to support academic research and documentation.
Addressing the Conference of Vice-Chancellors of State Public and Private Universities here, the Governor called upon higher education institutions to transform themselves into globally competitive, socially responsible and technologically advanced centres of learning while remaining firmly rooted in Indian values. He said universities must play a pivotal role in realising the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and preparing Odisha for future challenges.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister K.V. Singh Deo, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, along with several ministers and senior government officials, attended the conference.
Describing universities as centres of knowledge, innovation and leadership, Dr. Kambhampati said they bear a crucial responsibility in nation-building. With the world witnessing rapid technological advancements and evolving global challenges, he said higher education institutions must equip students with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to navigate an increasingly complex future.
The Governor said the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat extends beyond economic self-reliance and encompasses innovation, technology, manufacturing, healthcare, energy and education.
He urged universities to foster entrepreneurship and innovation among students, enabling them to emerge as drivers of social and economic transformation.
Highlighting the transformative potential of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Dr. Kambhampati said the policy promotes multidisciplinary education, academic flexibility, skill integration, digital learning, research excellence and stronger industry partnerships.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said universities are not merely degree-awarding institutions but hubs of knowledge creation, innovation and research. Reiterating the State Government’s goal of building a developed Odisha by 2036 and contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, he called upon educational institutions to prepare a roadmap for inclusive development and help position Odisha as a major growth engine of the country.
The conference also featured presentations on higher education reforms, skill development, internships and youth leadership initiatives.
During the event, the Chancellor’s Cup on Issues of National Importance, the Chancellor’s Cup for English Debate and the Chancellor’s Cup for Odia Debate were unveiled. Selected universities were also honoured for producing short films on drug de-addiction.
The two-day conference will continue on Monday with further deliberations on higher education, skill development and youth engagement.
