With major parts of Odisha continuing to reel under a sizzling heatwave, the state’s Works Department has directed that labourers must not be engaged in outdoor work between 11 am and 3 pm.
Amid reports that labourers are toiling under the scorching sun, the department issued a directive on Sunday instructing the Engineer-in-Chief (EIC) of the Works Department, Chief Construction Engineers, and Superintending Engineers of various zones to strictly enforce the order at construction sites.
The state government had earlier prohibited the deployment of workers under direct sunlight during the peak afternoon hours in view of the severe summer conditions. However, media reports indicating violation of the order at some places have prompted the department to reiterate the instructions, officials said.
Furthermore, the department has directed all contractors and executing agencies to immediately halt work during the restricted hours and ensure basic safety measures for labourers at worksites.
These include provision of shaded rest sheds, adequate drinking water and first-aid facilities.
Field-level officials have also been directed to stay alert and sensitise contractors and workers to prevent heat-related illnesses and any untoward incidents during the ongoing heatwave period.
