The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party, on Wednesday staged a massive demonstration in front of the District Commissioner’s office in Sribhumi, alleging large-scale irregularities and “vote chori” (vote theft) in the recent elections.
Carrying copies of the Constitution and raising slogans against what they termed a “democratic heist,” the protesters attempted to push past police barricades in a bid to reach the DC office. The situation quickly escalated into a scuffle between students and security personnel, following which several demonstrators were detained and escorted to the police station.
The agitation in Sribhumi is part of a broader, nationwide protest movement by the Congress and its affiliates over alleged electoral malpractices in recent polls. Over the past week, similar demonstrations have erupted in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and other major cities.
Congress leaders have repeatedly claimed that the BJP has been misusing state machinery and manipulating the electoral process, accusations that the saffron party has vehemently denied, terming them “politically motivated.”
The confrontation comes amid heightened political temperatures in Assam, where the opposition has been intensifying its street campaigns ahead of upcoming local body and assembly elections.
