NSA Doval, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hold 24th SR-level talks, call for proper settlement of border disputes

National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Tuesday met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi for the 24th round of Special Representative-level talks on resolving the border disputes between the two countries.

During the meeting, both Doval and Wang emphasised the need to increase mutual trust, stressing the need to maintain peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

In his opening remarks during the Special Representative-level talks, Doval highlighted the positive trend in bilateral ties since the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan last year.

“There has been an upward trend. Borders have been quiet. There has been peace and tranquillity. Our bilateral engagements have been more substantial. And we are most grateful to our leaders who, in Kazan last October, were able to set a new trend, and we have profited a lot since then,” he said.

The NSA added that the new environment has helped both countries move ahead.

“The new environment that has been created has helped us in moving ahead in the various areas that we are working on,” Doval noted.

Past setbacks were not in the interest of both countries: Wang

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi echoed Doval, saying the setbacks in bilateral ties were not in the interest of the people of both countries.

“The setbacks we experienced in the past few years were not in the interests of the people of our two countries. And then in October last year, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Modi had an important meeting in Kazan. That meeting pointed the direction for the development of our bilateral relations and provided impetus for the proper settlement of the boundary question,” he said.

The Chinese Foreign Minister further stressed the need to increase mutual trust and called for the proper settlement of border issues.

“Our two sides should follow the strategic guidance of our leaders, increase mutual trust through strategic communication, expand common interest through exchanges and cooperation, and properly settle the specific issues along the borders so as to advance our relationship in a healthy and sound manner,” he added.
