Uttar Pradesh Chief Minster Yogi Adityanath told the reporters that a survey is being held to ascertain the illegal migrants in the state and after the survey is completed, the government will decide to roll out the National Register of Citizens (NRC) like exercise.

CM had also stated during the recently concluded Assembly bypolls that the state may also take cue from Assam in implementing NRC.

“After the survey is complete, we will decide when to roll out the NRC-like exercise,” Yogi told reporters.

Sources in the home department confirmed IANS that a survey was underway by the state police for identifying the illegal migrants in Uttar Pradesh.

The UP DGP OP Singh had also sent letters to all district police chiefs, a month ago, for carrying out survey to identify different  illegal Bangladeshi and other immigrants living in the state.

The order to the district police chiefs also mentioned about identifying the Bangladeshi nationals living in the state illegally and then going off the radar.

It further asked the police chiefs to scan colonies near bus terminals and railway stations, and to verify the credentials of the people living in those areas.

The process of NRC update started in Assam following a Supreme Court order in 2013. On August 31, the final NRC was released in Assam leaving out 19 lakh people.

Several political parties, including the BJP in the northeastern state, have voiced their dissatisfaction with the final document released by the government.
