The Uttar Pradesh government has now made it mandatory for public transporters to put the names, Aadhaar numbers, and mobile numbers of the drivers on the vehicles.
A directive has been sent to all the districts of the state stating that all e-rickshaws, autos, taxis, app-based aggregators Ola, Uber, and Rapido, along with other public transport vehicles, will have to write the driver’s name, Aadhaar number, and mobile number on the vehicle.
For this exercise, the Transport Department has given 15 days’ time, and after the deadline, action will be taken against the errant drivers.
This system will first be implemented in Lucknow.
The instructions were issued after the Chairman of the State Women’s Commission sent a letter to the Transport Department on May 26, demanding such a system.
The department has first decided to implement this system in Lucknow. On behalf of the Lucknow Divisional Transport Office, all registered drivers have been asked to display the above information on their vehicles within 15 days.
The information will be displayed in the vehicle in such a way that it is visible to every passenger. The step will be beneficial to women travelling in autos and e-rickshaws. Prabhat Pandey, RTO (enforcement) of Lucknow, opined that when the driver’s name, Aadhar number, and mobile number are written on the vehicle, women will feel safe while traveling.
The passengers will also be able to send the information displayed in the vehicle from their mobile phones to their family members in case of need.
