The National Human Rights Commission on Friday served a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government over news of a man committing suicide following torture by police in Farrukhabad district.
The Commission issued the notice to the UP Director General of Police calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
The NHRC had taken suo motu cognizance of the media report of the man killing himself on July 15 after alleged physical torture by the police.
Reportedly, the police had called the man to the police station following a complaint against him by his wife.
According to the media report, carried on July 16, the victim reached the police station with his father for a compromise, but he was tortured, and a bribe was demanded to settle the matter.
