The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has identified 24 areas in different states as vulnerable to floods this monsoon and positioned teams there.

NDRF said there are different ways to get inputs on possible floods following which they deploy teams. “It can be through our past assessment in these areas, India Meteorological Department inputs and also sometimes the district administration requests us to deploy personnel,” said Krishan Kumar, public relations officer of NDRF.

NDRF said they have positioned teams in Assam, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

“In Assam there are six areas where we have deployed seven teams whereas in Gujarat in two areas including Surat two teams have been deployed by us,” said Kumar.

In Jammu and Kashmir areas like Baltal, Pahalgam, Panchtarani and Sheshnag are vulnerable to floods and four teams have been deployed.

Floods in Bihar are a recurring disaster, which on an annual basis destroy thousands of human lives apart from livestock and assets worth millions.

Five districts of the state including Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, West Champaran and Patna (Didarganj) are vulnerable to floods and the NDRF has positioned five teams.

Shimla, which served as the summer capital in British India, can also be affected by floods. In West Bengal’s three districts, Paschim Medinipur,  South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas, three teams have been deployed.

Three teams have been deployed for flood-prone districts in Punjab and Uttarakhand. Each team has 45 members and six rescue boats which work 24 hours during the flood situation, said Kumar.

The NDRF has also sensitised people who live in the flood-prone areas.

The teams are equipped with satellite phones to be in communication with the headquarters.

In addition, some teams are kept on standby at different NDRF bases.

A 24×7 NDRF control room in Delhi is monitoring the situation round the clock and is in touch with other agencies.
