National Mathematics Day: Tributes pour in for Srinivasa Ramanujan on birth anniversary

On the birth anniversary of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, which is also celebrated as National Mathematics Day, leaders across party lines recognised and remembered his contribution to the world.

Srinivasa was born in 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu. He went on to study in Trinity College in Cambridge, England, after his genius was discovered by a British mathematician, GS Hardy, with whom Srinivasa corresponded through letters.

Srinivasa’s accomplishment in the field of mathematics were interrupted, as he was not able to adjust in England. Being an orthodox Brahmin, Srinivasa was not able to receive a vegetarian diet and was also hospitalised due to ill health. He returned to India and breathed his last in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu.

Srinivasa died in 1920, when he was 32-year-old.

In 2012, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared 22 December as National Mathematics Day.

Recently, Dev Patel-starrer ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’ (2015) was one of the latest tributes to the mathematics wizard by the popular cinema.

On National Mathematics Day, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar on Twitter remembered the mathematician, Srinivasan Ramanujan, for his “exceptional contribution to the world of Mathematics”.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembered the great mathematician on Twitter

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari wrote on Twitter saying, Srinivasa Ramanujan “substantial contribution to mathematical analysis continue to inspire researchers across the world”.

On Srinivasa Ramanujan’s birth anniversary, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan wrote on Twitter saying, “The country will always remain indebted to you contribution”.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu took to Twitter in remembering the “great genius”.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal wrote on Twitter that Srinivasa Ramanujan, is an “inspiration for mathematicians across the world, and his work has inspired extensive research over the years”.

Congress party also tweeted about National Mathematics Day and said, “Despite having no formal training, Srinivasa Ramanujan was a genius in his own right” .

Minister of Commerce & Industry of India Suresh Prabhu also remembered the famed mathematician on the the National Mathematics Day.

Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan paid tribute to the Srinivasa Ramanujan on Twitter.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje remembered the mathematician and said that his “discoveries remain an inspiration to millions across the world”.

Congress leader Ashok Gehlot paid tribute to the “greatest mathematician of modern era” on Twitter.
