Nation remembers former PM Shastri on his 52nd death anniversary

Politicians cutting across party lines took to Twitter to pay tributes to former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his death anniversary. Lal Bahadur Shastri was on October 2, 1904, at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Sharada Prasad and Ramdulari Devi.

He led the country during the Indo-Pakistan War in 1965. His slogan of ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’, which means ‘Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer’, became an inspiring call and is still remembered.

On January 11, 1966, he breathed his last at Tashkent, Uzbekistan, a day after signing the Tashkent Declaration, reportedly due to a cardiac arrest.

Shastri was the first person to be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1966.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 52nd death anniversary saying he will be remembered for his courageous leadership.

The Indian National Congress paid tribute to India’s Second prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 52nd death anniversary.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala also took Twitter to remember Lal Bahadur Shastri on his death anniversary.

“On 52nd Death Anniversary of Bharat Ratna #LalBahadurShastri Ji, Delhi Dy CM @msisodia, Vidhansabha Speaker Ram Nivas Goel along with MLA @AdarshShastri, Grandson of Shastri ji & MLA Rajesh Rishi paid floral tributes at Vijay Ghat today,” The Aam Admi Party tweeted.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar also paid tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri on Twitter.

“Heartfelt tributes to former Prime Minister and freedom fighter #LalBahadurShastri on his Punya Tithi. Being a farmer’s son, his slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ continues to inspire me and millions across the nation”, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted.

Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot also took Twitter to remember Shastri on his 52nd death anniversary.

India’s former President Pranab Mukherjee Tweeted, “My respectful tributes to Former Prime Minister of India Shri #LalBahadurShastri on his death anniversary. His life and legacy of simplicity, humility and unconditional service to the Nation shall always be remembered”.

“Remembering Shri #LalBahadurShastri ji, our former Prime Minister and a great soul on his death anniversary.His call for “Jai Jawan,Jai Kisan” continues to inspire us,” Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu Tweeted.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to India’s former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his death anniversary.
