Stressing that India and Nepal were “age-old friends,” Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said “mutual respect and mutual cooperation” is needed between the two neighbouring countries.

“India and Nepal are age-old friends with similar cultures and traditions. Mutual respect and mutual cooperation is needed between our two countries,” Naidu said after meeting visiting Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

Earlier in the day, Oli met President Ram Nath Kovind who said that said India was ready to expand bilateral ties as per Nepal’s priorities because of New Delhi’s “abiding interest” in the stability and economic prosperity of the Himalayan nation.

Oli also held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and both the nations agreed to curb the misuse of their open borders.

In a joint statement, Modi said: “We have strong relations when it comes to the aspect of security and are committed towards stopping misuse of our open borders,” Modi had said.

Oli, in his statement said Nepal attaches great importance to its relations with India as the two nations enjoy age old historical ties and have many things to offer to each other.

Oli along with his wife Radika Shakya and a 54-member high-level delegation arrived on Friday on a three-day state visit.

Oli also met Congress President Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed “various dimensions of Nepal-India relations”.
