Jammu-Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ceasefire during Ramzan move demanding that Pakistan must reciprocate in the same voice.

Speaking to reporters in RS Pura sector, which has been hit badly by Pakistani shelling in the last few days, the J-K CM said, “We thought in Pakistan would not indulge in ceasefire violations in the holy month of Ramzan. It is sad that they have not reciprocated to the unilateral ceasefire in the Valley called by the Centre.”

“Our children died in the firing and shelling (from Pakistan),” she said expressing her outrage at the relentless ceasefire violations during this period.

“During Vajpayee-Musharraf era, there was a ceasefire for a long period which helped in peace for the people. Pakistan will have to think for peace,” she said.

“PM Modi has taken such a major step to ensure peace in the Valley. Pakistan, an Islamic Republic, should understand the importance of this holy month. It is their responsibility to stop the ceasefire violations. They should stop such activities so that the people from both the countries could stay in peace and see development,” added the chief of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who leads a coalition government in the state with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Mufti also announced the formation of special buildings to shelter people during ceasefire violations.

“We are discussing to make Border Bhavan so that at the time of such incidents, people can come and live there,” she said adding that jobs will be given to kin of those who lost their lives in the violations by Pakistan.

The CM expressed her pain that both India and Pakistan are spending a lot “on bullets and bombs” but not on infrastructure development.

“We are also working on forming an exclusive Border battalion in which people living closer to border areas will be included,” she said.

According to reports, 39 people, including 18 security personnel, lost their lives and many others were left injured in over 700 incidents of shelling and firing along the IB and the LoC this year.

In a recent ceasefire violation, an infant was shot by a Pakistani sniper and six others, including two BSF jawans, were killed in Jammu region.

New Delhi had on 16 May announced a ceasefire in Jammu-Kashmir, asking security forces to halt their operations during Ramadan to help “peace loving Muslims” observe the holy month in a peaceful environment.
