The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh, led by Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, is going to take another loan of Rs 4000 crore from the market on Tuesday, taking the total outstanding debt of the state government to Rs 4,53,640.27 crore.
On 26 August, too, the state government had taken a loan of Rs 4800 crore.
With today’s borrowing, the total debt of the government in the current financial year will reach Rs 31,900 crore.
Now the total debt of the state government has become more than Rs 4.53 lakh crore. As of 31 March 2025, the state’s debt stood at Rs 4,21,740.27 crore.
According to sources, the loan on Tuesday has been taken in three installments, including two of Rs 1500 crore each and one of Rs 1000 crore.
The three installments have been taken for repayment periods of 17 years, 19 years, and 20 years, respectively.
As per officials, the loan has been necessitated to pay the monthly benefit of the Laadli Behna Yojana, meet expenses on the Seva Parv celebrations in September, and for payments under other ongoing major schemes and projects.
The state government has justified the loan, reasoning that all loans are being taken within the prescribed borrowing limit. It also pointed out that the state registered a revenue surplus of Rs 12,487.78 crore in the 2023-24 financial year.
As per officials, during that year, the state’s total revenue was Rs 2,34,026.05 crore, while total expenditure was lower and stood at Rs 2,21,538.27 crore.
Since May this year, the BJP government has taken seven loans of different amounts.
It took a loan of Rs 5000 crore on 7 May and Rs 4500 crore on 4 June. Similarly, the government borrowed Rs 4800 crore on 8 July and Rs 4300 crore on 30 July. It again took loans twice in August, amounting to Rs 4000 crore on 5 August and Rs 4800 crore on 26 August.
Now, another loan in three installments totalling Rs 4000 crore would be* taken on 9 September.
