After winning Mungaoli, Kolaras Assembly seats in the Madhya Pradesh bypolls, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday congratulated the voters and party workers for their success.

“I congratulate the aware people of Madhya Pradesh, the voters and the Congress workers for our emphatic victory in Mungaoli and Kolaras,” Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.

“This is the defeat of arrogance and misrule and a victory for hope. The results earlier in Rajasthan, and now in Madhya Pradesh, have proved that a change is in the offing,” he added.

In a jolt to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government led by Shivraj Singh Chouhan ahead of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections this year, the opposition Congress on Wednesday won the by-polls for the Mungaoli and Kolaras seats.

Congress’s Brijendra Singh Yadav won the Mungaoli assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh by-elections, defeating the closest candidate by 2,124 votes. While securing 70,808 votes, Yadav edged past Bhai Sahab Deshraj Singh Yadav of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who managed 68,684 votes.

In the Kolaras seat, Congress candidate Mahendra Singh Yadav won by over 8,086 votes after 22 rounds of counting. Here too, in the 2013 assembly polls, Congress nominee Ram Singh Yadav had won by a comfortable margin of nearly 25,000 votes.
