The monsoon session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly will commence on October 14, in which the supplementary budget estimates for 2025-26 is to be presented in the House for approval.
Addressing news persons in his chambers, Speaker M Appavu said the Business Advisory Committee would sit on the first day of the session and decide on the schedule. Though expected to be a short session lasting for just three days, it is likely to be stormy .
With the ruling DMK and the principal Opposition AIADMK as well as actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay having launched their mass outreach in view of the upcoming assembly election, the session, despite being short, might witness heated exchanges. The AIADMK and BJP are likely to raise issues concerning ‘deteriorating’ law and order situation as well as the ‘failure’ implementation of poll promises by the DMK government. Even the DMK’s ally, CPI(M) might demand a special legislation to address honour killing in view of the rise in honour killings, and raise issues concerning dalits.
Though the DMK had, in its pre-poll promises, pledged to hold assembly sittings for 100 days, the Stalin government could not meet that target, providing the Opposition a handle to beat with. However, Chief Minister Stalin, who is currently on a spree of launching welfare schemes and developmental works from the Secretariat and in the districts besides presenting appointment orders to successful candidates, who have cleared the TNPSC, might use the opportunity to announce new schemes with an eye on the elections.
