Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of deliberately avoiding the issue of corruption during campaigning in Gujarat due to alleged corruption charges against BJP chief Amit Shah’s son.

Addressing a public rally in Patan ahead of the second phase of polling on December 14, the Gandhi scion said the elections were about the people of Gujarat and not about “Modi or Rahul”.

“Why hasn’t PM Modi spoken anything about corruption during his entire campaigning in Gujarat? It is because of Amit Shah’s son who is facing corruption charges,” said Rahul Gandhi.

In October, a news website had run a story that alleged that a firm owned by Amit Shah’s son, Jay Shah had suddenly shown turnover of 16,000 times in a year’s time, after the NDA government was formed at the Centre.

Rahul further accused the government in Gujarat of snatching land from farmers and giving it to industrialists like Tata and Adani.

“Modi ji had promised that poor villagers and farmers will get jobs at the Tata Nano factory. But not a single person got any job there?” Rahul said.

“This election is not about Modi or Rahul… It is about the people of Gujarat,” he added.

The first phase of polling across 89 constituencies in 19 districts of Kutch, Saurashtra and southern regions began on Saturday. Around 15 per cent polling was recorded in the first two hours.

Of the 89 seats, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party holds 67 and the Congress 16. One seat each is held by the NCP and JD-U while independents hold the remaining two.

Polling, which began at 8 am, will end at 5 pm. There are a total of 24,689 polling booths.

The second phase polling is on December 14 and counting, along with that of Himachal Pradesh, will be held on December 18.
