Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is scheduled to undertake an official visit to Qatar on April 9-10, just a day after the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. The visit assumes significance as India seeks to stabilise its energy supplies and strengthen ties with key partners in West Asia amid evolving geopolitical conditions.
The recent ceasefire, while easing immediate tensions, is being viewed as a temporary de-escalation rather than a lasting resolution. It will be important to see how the truce offering an “off-ramp” after weeks of hostilities, marks a structural shift in the region. For India, for its reliance on energy imports, the development brings cautious relief with a potential softening of global energy prices, even as risks to supply chains remain.
High-level review on preparedness
Notably, Puri participated in a meeting of the Informal Group of Ministers (IGoM), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, held at Kartavya Bhawan in New Delhi on April 8. The meeting assessed India’s preparedness in light of the evolving West Asia situation.
Key ministers including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and others attended the review.
Rajnath Singh emphasised the need for continued coordination, preparedness and resilience across departments to tackle any emerging challenges. He said the government is ensuring uninterrupted availability of LPG, petrol, diesel and fertilisers, while maintaining supply chains of essential commodities.
