President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday said the mid-day meal programme was playing a vital role in promoting education in the country as the financially weaker sections send their children to school for the “nutritious” and “wholesome” food.

“Mid-day meal promotes education because less well-off make an effort to send their children to school,” said Kovind after inaugurating the Adamya Chetana Seva Utsav 2018 and centenary celebrations of National Education Society in Bengaluru.

“The foundation provides quality mid-day meals to over 100,000 children each day through its Annapurna project… The meal itself is often the most nutritious and wholesome meal a child from a poorer family gets. And nutrition is linked to cognitive development and learning,” he added.

Lauding the National Education Society of Karnataka for running several leading educational institutions, Kovind said the National High School has given our country gifted and distinguished citizens.

“Among its alumni are former CJI Justice MN Venkatachalaiah, former Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy, ISRO chairman Dr AS Kiran Kumar and cricketer Anil Kumble,” he said.

“Happy that I am in Bengaluru for a function associated with the cause of learning and education, and of giving back to society. These are attributes that are so dear and so typical of the people of this state,” Kovind said.
