The Bharatiya Janata Party came down heavily on former ally Mehbooba Mufti, saying the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister had “exposed” her proximity to separatists by warning that if her Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was split it would create more militants in the state.

Union Minister of Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Mufti with her statement was “trying to give oxygen to terrorists”.

“Knowing or unknowingly she has only exposed her proximity to separatists,” said the BJP leader said.

Mehbooba Mufti sent out a strong message to the Centre on Friday saying consequences would be dangerous if Delhi tried to break the PDP.

“If Delhi tries to create divisions in the PDP and interfere like that, just like a Salahuddin and a Yasin Malik were born in 1987, the outcome will be dangerous. If they try the same thing now and interfere. . . if it tries to break PDP, then outcomes will be very dangerous. Without interference of Delhi there can be no break up or alliance in J&K. PDP is intact,” she told the reporters outside the martyrs’ graveyard in Srinagar.

Reacting to Mufti’s statement, BJP’s central committee member GVL Narasimha Rao said Mufti’s remarks were “very bizarre”.

Stating that she “seems under tremendous pressure from her own party”, he asked if she was now “equating her party with Hizbul Mujahiddin”.

Ever since the BJP withdrew support to Mehbooba on 19 June, speculations have been rife that the party leadership is in touch with several PDP MLAs and independents to form a new government in the state. At least seven PDP legislators have openly revolted against Mehbooba.
