Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday expressed thanks to cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar for sanctioning a sum of Rs 40 lakh for construction of a school building in Bandipura district of North Kashmir.

Tendulkar has sanctioned the amount out of his MP Local Area Development Funds (MPLAD).

Responding to the gesture of Tendulkar, Mehbooba tweeted: “Thankful to @sachin_rt for using his MPLAD funds for the contruction of a school building in Kashmir. Even off the field, he continues to inspire us all.”

Established in 2007, the Imperial Education Institute, Drugmulla, in Kupwara had requested for the funds for construction of 10 classrooms, four laboratories, an administrative block, six toilets and an assembly hall.

Tendulkar has asked the authorities to release the amount within 75 days of completion of all required formalities.

The financial help from Tendulkar has come at a time when the education infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir was targeted by terrorists and several school buildings were burnt. In a spree of burning school buildings two years ago, terrorists and radicals destroyed several schools. Only a couple of burnt schools have been rebuilt by the government.
