Elections for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) will be held on April 10, 2026, Health and Family Welfare minister Wailadmiki Shylla said on Tuesday.
He said the schedule for the GHADC polls was approved by the State Cabinet on Monday.
The date of notification to the elections will be issued on March 9. The last date for filing of nominations is March 16 and the scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on the same date after 3 p.m.
The last date for withdrawal of nomination is March 17 till 3 pm.
Publication of valid nominations and allotment of election symbols will be done on March 18. Polling will take place on April 10 from 7 am to 4 pm while results will be declared on April 14.
The NPP, which is leading the Executive Committee in GHADC, on Monday had declared its first list of 24 candidates for the upcoming GHADC elections, while denying party ticket to the incumbent Chief Executive Member of GHADC Albinush Marak.
NPP Working President and Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak said, Albinush was denied ticket over his “winnability” in the upcoming polls.
The NPP selected Calis G Momin to contest the Siju constituency in place of Marak.
He said the candidates have been chosen based on factors like “winnability, loyalty, and past experience”.
Marcuise informed that the NPP is yet to finalise candidates for five constituencies, Raksamgre, Naguapara, Bocdamgre, Silkigre and Rongrikkimgre.
Under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, Meghalaya has three district councils – for the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills – having powers on myriad issues such as forests, tax collection, and so on.
