Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday expressed concern over the growing political interference in religious festivals, rituals, and pilgrimages across Uttar Pradesh and other states, saying it has led to unnecessary controversies, tension, and conflicts in recent years.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Mayawati said that linking religion with politics for narrow political interests is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.
Referring to the ongoing dispute related to the holy bath in Prayagraj, she described it as a recent example of mutual disrespect, allegations, and counter-allegations, which, she said, is harmful to social harmony.
The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister emphasised that the Indian Constitution and law recognise public welfare and people-centric governance as the true national duty, keeping politics and religion separate. She stressed that political leaders must sincerely follow constitutional values and discharge their responsibilities honestly, without bias or animosity, in the interest of the social, political, and economic welfare of all sections of society.
Mayawati added that people expect such responsible conduct from political leaders even in the current circumstances. She appealed for the ongoing dispute over bathing in Prayagraj to be resolved through mutual consensus at the earliest.
Meanwhile, extending her greetings on the occasion of Uttar Pradesh Day, Mayawati conveyed her heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the people of the state.
