A major fire broke out at the abandoned Kingdom of Dreams (KOD) in Gurugram’s Sector 29 on Wednesday afternoon, triggering panic in the area.
Officials said that thick plumes of smoke and flames were seen rising from the premises.
As per the fire department, information about the blaze was received at around 1:45 p.m., following which multiple fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Firefighters launched an extensive operation to contain the flames, while police and emergency response teams secured the area and assisted in the rescue efforts.
Officials said there were no immediate reports of any casualties or people trapped inside the building. Fire personnel continued efforts to douse the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjoining structures.
Preliminary information suggested that the abandoned complex contained a large quantity of scrap material and old stage equipment, which might have spread the fire. Authorities said the exact cause of the blaze would be determined after a detailed investigation.
“The priority is to bring the fire under complete control. The cause will be ascertained only after the cooling operation and technical inspection are completed,” an official associated with the firefighting operation said.
The Kingdom of Dreams has remained shut for several years due to financial disputes and legal issues. Once regarded as one of India’s most prominent cultural and entertainment destinations, the sprawling complex had ceased operations long before Wednesday’s incident.
Developed at an estimated cost of around ₹200 crore and inaugurated in 2010, the six-acre venue was conceived as India’s first live entertainment, theatre and leisure destination. It showcased large-scale Bollywood-style musicals, cultural performances, traditional handicrafts and regional cuisines under one roof, blending Indian heritage with modern technology.
Fire officials said cooling operations were expected to continue for several hours, while investigators would examine the site once the blaze was fully extinguished to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.
