Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday urged the Haryana government to ensure justice for the family of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar by taking strict action against the senior officers named in his suicide note, instead of shielding its blue-eyed officials.
Interacting with media persons after meeting the bereaved family of Kumar here on Saturday, the Chief Minister appealed to both the Government of India and the Haryana government to stand with the family in this hour of grief.
He said that, rather than protecting the interests of their favoured officers, the Haryana government must deliver justice to the aggrieved family. Mann added that he has also raised this issue with the Governor of Punjab, who serves as the Administrator of Chandigarh, urging that the officers named by Y Puran Kumar be booked without delay.
The Chief Minister said the entire family is in deep trauma following the death of the senior IPS officer, who hailed from a humble background. He noted that the deceased officer’s wife, herself a senior Haryana government officer and a daughter of Punjab, has been compelled to run from pillar to post for justice. Mann said it was distressing that such incidents of targeting members of weaker sections were increasing across the country.
Terming the case a conspiracy to victimize officers and individuals from underprivileged communities who have risen to high positions, Mann cited the example of the Chief Justice of India, who, he said, was being targeted daily through online trolling as part of a malicious campaign.
He remarked that even he faces similar attacks because he belongs to a common, non-political family background.
Mann alleged that certain elements were attempting to alter the Constitution of India, which was meticulously drafted by visionary leaders like Dr BR Ambedkar to safeguard the rights of weaker sections.
He said atrocities against Scheduled Caste communities have been rising across the country, especially in 2025. The Chief Minister added that the deceased officer, in his suicide note, had specifically mentioned the discrimination he faced, yet the Haryana government failed to take any action.
