Union sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya and International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah on Thursday wished the sports media fraternity on the occasion of World Sports Journalists Day, acknowledging the role journalists play in promoting sport and bringing athletes’ stories to fans around the world.

Observed every year on July 2, World Sports Journalists Day celebrates the contribution of sports journalists, photographers, broadcasters and digital content creators who cover sporting events and document the achievements of athletes. The day was instituted by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) in 1994 to mark the organisation’s 70th anniversary. AIPS was founded on July 2, 1924, during the Paris Olympic Games.

Mandaviya described sports journalists as important partners in India’s sporting journey, saying they not only celebrate achievements but also help identify emerging talent and inspire the next generation of athletes. He added that the dedication and professionalism of the sports media continue to strengthen India’s sporting ecosystem.

“Sports journalists are vital partners in India’s sporting journey, celebrating achievements, highlighting talent, and inspiring the next generation of athletes. On World Sports Journalists Day, I extend my heartfelt wishes to the entire sports media fraternity. Your hard work, dedication, and professional integrity continue to strengthen India’s sporting ecosystem. Happy World Sports Journalists Day!” he posted on social media.

Shah also paid tribute to sports scribes, praising their commitment to telling the stories behind the game. He said their work goes beyond reporting scores and results, helping connect fans with athletes and contributing to the growth of sport worldwide.

“On World Sports Journalists Day, I extend my appreciation to sports journalists around the world whose dedication and passion bring the stories of sport to life. Your commitment to informing, inspiring, and connecting fans plays a vital role in the growth of sport globally. Thank you for your invaluable contribution,” Shah wrote.
