In what may further vitiate the atmosphere between India and the Maldives, an MP supporting the Yameen government in Male was sent back from Chennai immigration.

It is learnt that Ahmed Nihan, majority leader and parliamentary group leader of the ruling party in the archipelago, flew into Chennai via Colombo on the night of 4 June.

Sources said Nihan has been travelling to India twice every year for medical check-up for the past two years. This is the first time that the Majlis member was denied entry without any official reason.

The Maldivian embassy is believed to have tried reaching out to the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday night after the immigration authorities refused entry to Nihan.

The matter has also been taken up by the Maldivian Foreign Ministry with Indian High Commissioner Akhilesh Mishra. Nihan also posted it on his official twitter handle.

Relations between India and the Maldives deteriorated earlier this year when President Yameen clamped down an emergency citing internal security concerns. The Maldives had stayed away from the regional naval exercise as well as the Defence Expo in India.
