An Indian journalist, who was arrested in Maldives on 9 February amid a raging political crisis, will be, reportedly, deported on Saturday (February 10). The journalist was an employee of a French news agency.

According to the NDTV, an official has confirmed that the journalist will be deported today.

Following reports of the journalist being arrested in the Maldives, India on Friday had said that it sought details of the case.

“We have received information about an Indian national, Money Sharma, working as a journalist, who has been detained by the Maldivian authorities,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar had said.

“We have asked our Embassy to get in touch with the local authorities to ascertain more details of the case,” he added.

According to reports, Sharma from Amritsar and Atish Ravji Patel, an India-born British national from London, both employees of a foreign news agency, were arrested under a Maldivian decree for “national security purposes”.

The Maldives has plunged into a crisis with its President Abdulla Yameen declaring a state of emergency and arresting the Chief Justice and a former head of state.
