Major chaos at Calcutta High Court, lawyers shout ‘thief’ slogans at Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee appeared before the Calcutta High Court in connection with a case related to alleged post-poll violence and attacks on party offices.

Chaotic scenes unfolded at the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, May 14, when TMC chief Mamata Banerjee faced “thief” slogans from a section of lawyers.

The former West Bengal chief minister was trying to exit the premises following a post-poll violence hearing when the incident took place. She was accompanied by TMC leader and advocate Kalyan Banerjee.

Kalyan Banerjee later alleged that the lawyers under the influence of the BJP attempted to heckle Mamata Banerjee, and the party’s legal team had a tough time safely escorting her out.

Talking to reporters, Kalyan Banerjee said the court is “not a place to publicly brand someone a thief or a dacoit.”

“We can also say similar things about Opposition party leaders. The former CM had gone to the court to argue a petition, and we faced immense difficulty while leaving the place after the hearing got over… If this can happen to Mamata Banerjee, imagine what’s happening currently with the ordinary workers of the TMC across Bengal,” he added.

Mamata Banerjee had appeared before the High Court to argue over the alleged post-poll violence in the state as well as attacks on TMC party offices.

The matter is related to a PIL filed by advocate Shirshanya Bandyopadhyay on behalf of the TMC. It has been alleged that party offices were attacked following the announcement of the 2026 Assembly results, with BJP emerging victorious and marking an end to TMC government’s 15-year rule in the state.

Further, the plea claims that TMC leaders as well as party workers were forced to flee their homes after the elections, while many of them were attacked “because of their association with the Trinamool Congress”.

The petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court on May 12. The matter was heard by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Parthasarathi Sen.
