Maharashtra civic election results LIVE: Mahayuti set to sweep BMC polls; PM Modi thanks voters, says proud of NDA workers. (ANI)

As votes are being counted for the country’s richest civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the BJP and Shiv Sena-led Mahayuti alliance has crossed the majority mark. The Mahayuti alliance’s performance deals a blow to the Thackeray cousins, who came together ahead of polls after decades in a bid to retain control of the BMC.

The BJP appears set to emerge as the single largest party in the BMC, with its Mahayuti alliance on course to secure a decisive mandate.

The reason why the BMC election is closely watched is due to the fact that the civic body has immense political and financial significance. The BMC has an annual budget exceeding Rs 74,400 crore, and securing control of the BMC has always been the goal of all political dispensations. The BMC elections were held after a gap of almost nine years, which has added to the anticipation.

Across other civic bodies as well, the BJP-led alliance was slated to perform well. In the 29 municipal corporations, the BJP was leading in 909 wards, while its ally, the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, was ahead in 237 wards.

Votes were polled for a total of 2,869 seats across 893 wards in the 29 municipal corporations on Thursday. There were a total of 15,931 candidates, including nearly 1,700 contestants in Mumbai alone. Around 3.48 crore voters were eligible to cast their votes.

Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Results LIVE UPDATES:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed gratitude to the people of Maharashtra and called the mandate in the civic body polls a reflection of the strong bond between the NDA and the people of the state. He further said that the record-breaking poll results will act as a catalyst for greater development in the state.

PM Modi posted in Marathi on the social media platform X: “Thank you, Maharashtra. The enthusiastic people of the state have blessed the NDA's agenda of public welfare and good governance. The results of various municipal corporation elections show that the bond between the NDA and the people of Maharashtra has become even stronger. The experience of our performance and the vision of development have touched the hearts of the people.”

He also lauded the NDA workers for the BJP-Shiv Sena-led victory in the Maharashtra civic polls. He wrote, "I am very proud of every NDA Karyakarta who worked tirelessly among people across Maharashtra. "We thank the people of Maharashtra and all supporters on behalf of the BJP for this success in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is one of the largest municipal bodies not only in India but possibly in Asia. I can say that the people of Maharashtra have put a stamp on this new development for India. I feel that Gen Z has voted in favour of 'Viksit Bharat'."

"The RPI(A) was with Uddhav Thackeray since 2012, which is why he remained in power, but today neither the BJP nor the RPI(A) is with him. Vote counting for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections is underway. Visuals have emerged from a counting centre in Mumbai’s Worli area as the process begins.

The recently concluded BMC elections saw a voter turnout of 52.94 per cent, according to figures released by the State Election Commissioner. Polling for Mumbai’s civic body concluded on Thursday amid tight security arrangements.

Initial trends have not brought encouraging signs for the Thackeray brothers, with the Shiv Sena (UBT) reportedly leading in 22 seats and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) ahead in eight seats. The Congress has recorded leads in four wards at this early stage of counting.

Early leads emerging from the counting of postal ballots in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections indicate an advantage for the BJP–Shiv Sena Mahayuti alliance. Preliminary trends suggest the alliance is leading in around 52 wards, with the BJP ahead in 35 seats and the Shiv Sena in 17 seats so far. Officials said the figures are based on initial postal ballot counting, while official data from the State Election Commission (SEC) and the BMC is awaited.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut raises concerns over the voting pattern in Mumbai, alleging that names of several voters who had participated in earlier Assembly elections were missing from electoral rolls in areas where the Shiv Sena (UBT), MNS and Congress have influence. He also claims that Electronic Voting Machines did not function properly and says the Election Commission was unwilling to address their complaints, while pointing to a meeting between senior BJP leaders and Election Commission staff during the polling period.

Raut further questions the timing of exit polls, saying they were aired even before voting percentages were announced, and alleges that the BJP began celebrating victory prematurely. He adds that his party has appealed to voters not to feel intimidated and to remain confident.

For the BMC elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS president Raj Thackeray came together after nearly 20 years of political separation. The alliance was forged to counter the BJP–Shiv Sena combine in Mumbai’s civic battle.

The municipal elections have drawn significant attention due to major changes in political alignments. Former allies contested separately, while erstwhile rivals joined hands for the civic polls, reshaping traditional political equations in several cities.

Apart from Mumbai, counting is underway for municipal corporations in Jalgaon, Dhule, Latur, Nashik, Amravati, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Chandrapur, Nanded-Waghala, Parbhani, Jalna, Ichalkaranji, Akola, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Solapur, Malegaon, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Panvel, and Ahilyanagar.

Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), regarded as one of the richest civic bodies in Asia, is among the most closely watched contests. Elections were also held in major cities including Thane, Pune, Kalyan-Dombivli, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayandar and Ulhasnagar.

Election officials, political party representatives and supporters have assembled at various counting venues across the state.

The BJP–Shiv Sena (Shinde faction)-led Mahayuti is locked in a direct contest with the alliance of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction), MNS, and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP. In several cities, local alliances, independents, and smaller parties are expected to play a decisive role.

Exit polls conducted by Lokshahi and Rudra Research have also pointed towards a victory for the BJP-led Mahayuti in the Maharashtra civic body elections, including the BMC.

The Times Now exit poll has indicated a clear edge for the BJP-led Mahayuti in Mumbai. As per the survey, Mahayuti (BJP–Shinde Sena) is projected to secure 42–45 per cent of the vote share, while the Shiv Sena (Thackeray faction)–MNS alliance may get 34–37 per cent. The Congress–Vanchit alliance is projected at 13–15 per cent, with others at 6–8 per cent.

According to the Janmat exit poll, the BJP–Shinde alliance is expected to secure around 138 seats in the BMC, comfortably crossing the majority mark. In contrast, the alliance of the Thackeray brothers and the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (excluding the Ajit Pawar faction) is projected to win 62 seats. The Congress–Vanchit Aghadi combine may secure about 20 seats, while other parties are expected to win around seven seats.

Exit polls telecast after voting ended on Thursday have projected an advantage for the BJP-led Mahayuti in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Surveys aired on multiple television channels suggested that the alliance of BJP and the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) could secure a majority in the 227-member civic body, potentially ending nearly 25 years of uninterrupted rule by the undivided Shiv Sena.

On the Maharashtra civic body elections, AIMIM national spokesperson Waris Pathan on Thursday said, "This is an exit poll, not an accurate poll, and whatever is being shown, this isn't the first time it's happened. It's happened many times before that something was shown in the poll, and in the end, it turned out to be something else. Tomorrow (Friday, January 16) is the vote counting, so tomorrow the results will come out. By tomorrow evening, everything will be clear. Who won, who lost, everything will be known... We are confident that the people have blessed us with their votes... We will achieve great success..."

On Maharashtra civic body elections, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC on Thursday said, "We welcome the exit polls but tomorrow (Friday, January 16, 2026), post 12 o'clock you will realise that history is being made by the Mahayuti, based on the sheer developmental agenda of Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis. There are certain people who choose to work from home and people have rejected that. They have only chosen the people who work on the ground, and to make Mumbai a Viksit Mumbai and a Viksit Maharashtra, you need to have leaders like Eknath Shinde who have tirelessly toiled on the vision plan for a pothole-free Mumbai..."

Shiv Sena leader Raju Waghmare says, "The results of the exit polls that are coming before everyone are also our expectation that the Mahayuti government will be formed in this Mumbai Municipal Corporation. We had already said that more than 150 of our people will be elected. Today, looking at the exit polls and even if you calculate the mega exit poll of the entire exit polls, this is what will come before you that Mahayuti will touch 150 in any case and the mayor will be Marathi and Hindu only..."

On BMC elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey says, "We have gained strength with the Thackerays coming together. We are hopeful that the results will be in our favour."
