The Government Railway Police (GRP) has ordered a departmental inquiry after a viral video showed a man being assaulted by passengers at a railway station in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior. A Sub-Inspector has been shifted to police lines over alleged negligence in handling the matter.
The action was taken after people raised allegations that the GRP did not initiate prompt legal action against the man, who was detained in an alleged theft attempt and rather allowed him to leave.
As per Railway Police, the incident took place at Platform No. 2 of the Gwalior Railway Station at around 4 p.m. on June 29.
At first, a woman accused the man of attempting to snatch a gold earring from her ear. After she raised an alarm, fellow passengers soon caught hold of the accused and alleged assaulted him before security personnel intervened, IANS reported.
During this time, the youth is said to have picked up a child accompanying him in an apparent bid to protect himself from the mob.
A video capturing the entire incident was recorded by a bystander and later went viral across social media, drawing major attention towards the matter.
According to officials, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel had rescued the person and later handed him over to the GRP to take further action. However, handling of the case came under heavy scrutiny over allegations of not taking immediate legal action against him. Thereafter, the Railway Police Headquarters took cognisance of the viral video and ordered a preliminary inquiry.
Based on the findings, GRP Sub-Inspector Chetan Korolia was attached to police lines. “A departmental inquiry has been initiated into the incident. We are also identifying the people involved in assaulting the youth on the basis of the viral video. Action will be taken against anyone found guilty, in accordance with the law,” IANS quoted Railway Superintendent of Police Rajesh Singh as saying.
Further investigation in the matter is currently underway.
