Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that Made in India semiconductor chips will be available in the market by the end of this year.

“We are working on semiconductors in mission mode. By the end of this year, Made in India semiconductor chips, manufactured by our own people, will reach the market,” Modi said in his Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

PM Modi also criticised previous governments for delaying the country’s entry into semiconductor manufacturing.

“When we speak of different aspects of technology, I draw your attention to semiconductors as an example. I am not here at the Red Fort to criticise any government, but the youth of the country should know the truth. Work on semiconductors began 50–60 years ago in our country. The idea of setting up a semiconductor factory emerged back then, but it was killed in the womb. We lost 50–60 precious years,” he said.

Modi noted that several countries have since mastered semiconductor technology and established global dominance, while India lagged behind.

However, he stressed that his government is now advancing semiconductor development “in mission mode.”

The Prime Minister announced that “six different semiconductor units are coming up on the ground” and that the government has already approved four new units.

Earlier this year, the Union Cabinet approved the establishment of four semiconductor units under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) with a total investment of around ₹4,600 crore. These units will be set up in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh.
