An 87-year-old shrine that has quietly anchored faith and social harmony along Lucknow’s Kanpur Road is set for a comprehensive facelift.
The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has allocated a ₹80.27 lakh project for the tourism development and beautification of the Ravidas Temple at Bara Birwa, with ₹60 lakh already released as the first instalment to fast-track the works.
The redevelopment aims to enhance facilities for the steady stream of devotees who visit the temple, especially during Ravidas Jayanti, when the precinct transforms into a vibrant centre of devotional gatherings and community participation. Officials say the project is designed to combine heritage preservation with practical upgrades that make the site more accessible, organised and environmentally sustainable.
UP Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said here on Wednesday that the temple holds significance not only as a religious site but also as a symbol of social awareness and harmony. “The Ravidas Temple at Bara Birwa represents devotion along with social consciousness. Our effort is to provide modern facilities while preserving its spiritual identity,” he said, adding that the state remains committed to developing pilgrimage centres associated with the saint tradition.
Under the approved plan, the temple complex will see the construction of modern public toilets equipped with civil, plumbing and fire safety provisions. A dormitory and tourist rest room are also being built to accommodate outstation devotees, particularly those travelling from neighbouring districts and states for major events. Directional signage will be installed across the premises to streamline visitor movement and improve overall accessibility.
In a step towards energy sustainability, a 10-kilowatt solar power plant will be installed to strengthen the electricity supply and promote eco-friendly infrastructure. Additional amenities include seating benches for elderly visitors and adequate waste management systems to maintain cleanliness within the premises.
Temple authorities note that the shrine, associated with the memory and teachings of Sant Shiromani Guru Ravidas, has long served as a centre of devotion and social reform. Managed by the Sant Ravidas Seva Samiti, the temple witnesses year-round footfall, with large congregations assembling during annual celebrations. The state government sees the current upgrade as part of a broader approach to recognise and elevate sites linked with the Bhakti and Sant traditions.
Officials say the project will be completed in a planned and time-bound manner. With improved infrastructure and enhanced facilities, the Bara Birwa Ravidas Temple is expected to strengthen Lucknow’s standing as a city where historic shrines continue to evolve alongside contemporary needs, offering devotees a cleaner, safer and more welcoming environment for worship and reflection.
