As a belligerent Opposition looks to corner the government in Parliament on the first day of Winter Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he was looking forward to a “constructive” session with “healthy, positive” debates.

Speaking to media outside Parliament, Modi sought cooperation of the Opposition to pass key bills in the house in a bid to “strengthen democracy” and to ensure “nation’s growth”.

“The Winter Session of Parliament is starting and I am confident that it will be productive session. I hope there is constructive debate and we come up with innovative solutions to our nation’s problems,” Modi said.

“I hope all members will utilise Parliament time for discussing important issues. At yesterday’s all-party meeting, we all were clear that we need to take the country ahead and this session should be used positively to achieve that,” he added.

“May this Parliament Session contribute to the nation’s growth,” he said further.

The session is likely to be stormy with the Opposition led by Congress determined to corner the Modi government on a host of issues even as the ruling BJP hopes to get key bills passed.

The most important business would be the Supplementary Demands for Grants, which is the first one after the implementation of GST; the 123rd Constitutional Amendment for setting up of National Commission for Backward Classes as a constitutional body; and the Bill against triple talaq.

However, the opposition is all set to attack the government on Modi’s allegations against Manmohan Singh, former Vice President Hamid Ansari and others, as also the disqualification from Rajya Sabha of veteran socialist leader Sharad Yadav and Ali
