Jahangir Khan’s arrest on ‘extortion’ charges sparked major political debate in West Bengal as angry locals reportedly ransacked the TMC leader’s office in Falta in South 24 Parganas district on Monday, June 8.
According to PTI, Khan was arrested near the India-Nepal border in north Bengal. His office was allegedly vandalised by locals, with the mob smashing windowpanes and damaging furniture in several rooms of the property.
An official informed that police will carry out an investigation in connection with the incident.
It is being said that people found several packets of relief supplies inside the office. This further triggered anger among the locals as they accused Khan of withholding materials that was supposed to be distributed among the needy people in the region.
Khan’s arrest came after the Calcutta High Court on May 26 vacated an interim protection granted to him. As many as seven FIR are registered against Khan at the Flata police station.
A few weeks ago, the TMC leader came fourth in the Falta Assembly repoll on May 21 after announcing withdrawal of his candidature before the voting.
