Ahead of the counting of votes for the Kerala Assembly elections, CPI(M) state secretary M. V. Govindan on Sunday expressed confidence that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) will retain power for a third consecutive term.
Speaking to the media, Govindan said exit polls projecting 60 to 69 seats for the LDF indicate a clear advantage, noting that the coalition needs only a few more seats to cross the majority mark of 71 in the 140-member Assembly.
“If we examine the exit poll results carefully, we can infer that the LDF will return to power. Those who earlier predicted that the UDF would cross the 100-seat mark have now backtracked. With projections of 60–69 seats, we need only a couple more to secure a majority, and it is possible we will surpass that,” he said.
Targeting the Congress, Govindan alleged that the opposition camp was grappling with internal leadership issues rather than focusing on governance or policy matters.
He further asserted that the exit poll data reflects the absence of anti-incumbency sentiment against the LDF government. Govindan also pointed out that several surveys have consistently ranked Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as the most preferred leader for the top post.
Dismissing the prospects of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), he claimed the alliance would fail to open its account in the state. He specifically expressed confidence that the LDF would win key constituencies such as Nemom, Kazhakootam, and Vattiyoorkavu.
“The LDF will definitely win Nemom, Kazhakootam, and Vattiyoorkavu constituencies. The BJP will not secure any seat this time,” he said.
